Murder Most Feline
A collection of stories about cats and the courtroom. A few are somewhat
interesting, but on the whole, I'd give it a miss.
The Mouse and the Motorcycle
An enchanting children's book about a mouse, a boy, and a toy motorcycle
which actually works if you go "vroom". Definitely recommended.
The Binding Chair
This work of fiction follows the life of a woman from the last generation
in China to have their feet bound. (I was fascinated - and repulsed - to find
out that this practice was commonplace for a millenium in middle and upper
class Chinese.) With each chapter, the story flashes forward and backward
in time as it traces the lives of the protagonist and her British niece.
It contains some disturbingly dark images of violence and sexuality, so
some readers may wish to avoid it. With that caveat, it is very well written
and compelling, introduces a variety of interesting characters, and has much
to recommend it. This book is on the "Seasons Readings" list published by
the Durham County Libraries.
The Complete Book of Breastfeeding
Very helpful and thorough book on breastfeeding. I read the 1979 edition,
which is certainly dated in terms of some of the research it references
(e.g. "There is no proof of ill effects [to nursing babies of mothers who smoke].")
and in some of the attitudes which at the time were more strongly
anti-breastfeeding. This book gets bonus marks from me, however, for being
the only breastfeeding publication I have read to say that if a baby does
not gain weight very well on a breastmilk-only diet, it is ok to supplement
with some formula.
